Thoughts on Apple's Vision Pro

20th September 2023

As we stand on the brink of a new technological era with the introduction of Apple’s Vision Pro, a question arises for me: Is this device more akin to the entertainment-centric iPod or the productivity-focused iPhone? It’s unclear to me, as I am unsure if there is a significant product in using the Vision Pro professionally.

Positioning by Apple

The Vision Pro has the potential to straddle both worlds, much like the iPhone did by integrating the entertainment features of the iPod into a powerful productivity tool. At least that’s what Apple is suggesting. This duality is significant as it positions the Vision Pro not just as a gadget to consume content, but as a versatile platform that could redefine how we engage in work-related tasks. The iPhone’s success was largely due to its ability to cater to both entertainment and productivity, and the Vision Pro could follow suit, offering immersive experiences that blend gaming, media consumption, and professional applications.

The competitive landscape

Apple’s strategic positioning in the market is unique. They usually nail the moment to enter. The introduction of the Vision Pro raises therefore the question: is this the truly optimal moment for Apple to fully commit to this new market? The history of the iPhone illustrates how competition can solidify rivals, such as Samsung. Dull performance in this market would lead to a divergence from the track record of the usual sharp brilliance Apple has shown in the past.

Launching a pre-mature product

One strategy Apple might employ is to delay signaling a mature market by maintaining higher prices for the Vision Pro, ensuring they remain competitive with existing products like Microsoft’s HoloLens. By doing so, Apple can create a perception of exclusivity and innovation, while simultaneously staving off immediate competition and iterating on the actual product. This tactic could allow Apple to establish a strong foothold before competitors can fully respond.

If this is the case, it would actually show a stark change on how new products are launched at Apple, maybe the first true DNA change under Tim Cook. Apple is uniquely positioned to execute such a strategy, as they are known to offer products in a more premium price range.

Further thoughts

The Vision Pro represents a significant step forward for Apple, with the potential to redefine the boundaries between entertainment and productivity. The company has to navigate the complexities of market competition, and its strategic decisions will be crucial in determining the device’s success. Whether the Vision Pro ultimately becomes a staple in our daily lives like the iPhone or remains a niche product will depend on how well Apple can balance these dual aspects and manage the competitive landscape.
